Foot Fracture
|
Approximately 10% of all fractures occur in the foot. These bones comprise 2 bones in the
back of the foot (calcaneus, talus), 5 bones in the midfoot (navicular, cuboid, 3 cuneiforms), and 19 bones in the forefoot (5 metatarsals, 14 phalanges
or toes). Most stress fractures occur in the weight-bearing bones of the foot and lower leg. The most common sites are the second and third metatarsals of the foot. Stress fractures are also common in the heel (calcaneus), and the navicular, a bone on the
inside and top of the midfoot. Fifth
metatarsal fractures are very commonly
associated with severe ankle sprains.
